New Lake House… Family-friendly Great Room

When our homeowners were designing their new custom-built lake-front home, they had family and friends in mind.  Spaces were well thought-out, including the great room, where they would spend most of their leisure time with their two small children.

The great room is designed for family living with a comfortable sectional and round reclaimed wood cocktail table – easy for toddlers and young kids to maneuver around. Custom details like the stone fireplace, custom built bookcases and coffered ceiling were designed based upon the customer wishes.

The gorgeous custom-built stone fireplace and bookcases, styled with personal family photos and finds, add warmth and personality to the space. Light and crisp paint colors are bright, fresh and on-trend, while the wall of windows frame the view of the lake. Truly a “great room” to come home to!

New Lake House… Kitchen with a View

A recent design project with MWG Custom Homes introduced me to Kelly and Judd, homeowners who contracted MWG to build their dream home on a serene lake in Central New York.

Kelly and Judd wanted a kitchen designed to entertain family and friends – truly the heart of the home.  The end result was a stunning kitchen with an amazing view of the lake.

Beauty and function – this kitchen can handle more than one cook in the kitchen. Perfect for making family dinners and entertaining guests.

This kitchen was built for entertaining… with a huge kitchen island to the right; a wine bar island in the center; and a water-view dining area at the left (waiting for the arrival of the homeowners custom-built round dining table). All have a view to the lake thanks to a stunning round wall of windows. We chose an eclectic mix of lighting that adds interest to the space. We handled the seating for the counter, wine bar and dining table with the same principle – coordinating not necessarily matching.

With a large built-in wine/beverage cooler close at hand, the wine bar island is a welcoming spot to relax after a long day.

The dining table will be well worth the wait. Can you imagine dinners with the sunset on the lake?!

This kitchen project is almost complete – our dining chairs are ready… just waiting for the arrival of the custom-built round walnut and metal dining table.  A smart purchase by the homeowner.  Can’t wait to see it!

Kitchen Redesign – Adding Storage & Style

kitchen wall afterThis kitchen was big on space – however it was wide open space that was under utilized.  The entire back was open. The homeowner previously had a small kitchen table just beyond the peninsula, but we had other ideas as there was also open space at the other end of the kitchen.

We decided to move the table to the right end of the kitchen opening, which opened up a huge space – perfect for pantries that would provide a huge amount of storage.

kitchen wall before 3Next step was building out two pantries – one to hold food items and a second to hold kitchen appliances and essentials.  So much storage – a home cook’s dream!

Originally we considered installing matching kitchen cabinets and granite in the space between the pantries, but decided on a piece of furniture and art which dresses up the kitchen and ties nicely to the reclaimed wood & iron bar table at the other end of the kitchen.

Interior Style… Layering with Vintage Art

dining room after 7
I’ve been very into using classic artwork in new ways. Using vintage doors, windows and architectural pieces layered with wreaths, greenery and art as wall decor opens so many styling opportunities.

I had a print of a 1920’s Maxfield Parish piece that I loved put onto canvas.

70’s Colonial Redesign – Dining Room

So excited to get to work on this 70’s colonial.  This house has great bones, a huge kitchen and a fantastic backyard… just needs a bit of updating to make it feel like home.

Since the first thing you see when you walk in the door is the dining room, so that was the first project to tackle.

Moccasin Path - Dining Room 2 before (2)

For instant gratification, a fresh paint job (walls in taupe-greige and ceiling in a soft gray-blue), a new area rug and window treatments were the answer.

Moccasin Path - Dining Room AFTER 4

To keep costs down, we elected to work with furniture that we already  owned with the exception of two new distressed leather upholstered chairs and a new chandelier.

Moccasin Path - Dining Room AFTER Chand Best

I love the rustic feel of this chandelier – almost looks barbed wire – with subtle lightly brushed gold accents.

I’ve been obsessed with these distressed leather-covered dining chairs since I got them in my store, and knew they would be a perfect replacement for the arm chairs at the head of the dining room table.

Moccasin Path - Dining Room AFTER leather chairs

This room was starting to remind me our of trips to California wine country and Sedona, AZ.

Luckily the dining room is huge, so I was able to include a special family heirloom – my grandparents piano, along with a couple of favorite Stickley pieces and a great accent chair.

Moccasin Path - Dining Room AFTER 2

All and all the room feels like home.  It’s warm and inviting and ready for guests, which is a good thing since our first family gathering is tonight!
